Natural Resources Management

With its coastline, rivers, creeks, rolling hills and fertile farming land the southern Adelaide region is home to a wide variety of natural resources.

To achieve the balance between caring for the coastline, land, water, plants and animals against the needs of landowners and the wider community, a Natural Resources Management (NRM) framework has been established in South Australia.

Under this framework, the southern metropolitan area is part of the Adelaide Mount Lofty Ranges NRM Board region which operates and supports a series of projects including the Onkaparinga Estuary Action Plan.

Community involvement is an important part of NRM in South Australia. So if you are interested in getting outside, rolling up your sleeves and becoming involved in protecting the biodiversity and environment that makes the southern suburbs so special, there are a variety of environmental volunteer groups and programs operating in "The South". You can even take part in your own backyard through the Urban Forest Biodiversity Program.

If you want to discover more of the natural resources in the southern Adelaide metropolitan region, national parks to visit in the area include:

Coast Park

Coast Park is a State Government initiative to develop a 70km linear park right along the metropolitan Adelaide coastline from North Haven through to Sellicks Beach. The Park is being developed in stages in partnership with local government, and will include as far as possible a continous two-way pathway or 'trail' for walkers and cyclists along the coastal foreewhore. Altogether about 60 projects across six local council areas have been identified, including the environmental restoration of dunes.
