Southern Suburbs Co-ordination Group

In February 2008 Mitsubishi Motors announced their intention to close the plant at Tonsley Park by the end of March 2008. As part of the response to the announcement, the State Government created the Southern Suburbs Co-ordination Group (SSCG) to provide a co-ordinated role for the variety of agencies dealing with the consequences of the closure and the opportunities for the southern metropolitan region. Its focus is on workers' needs and business investment in the southern suburbs.

Membership:

Minister for the Southern Suburbs, the Honourable John Hill MP (Chair) and representatives from Planning and Local Government (DPLG), Department of Trade and Economic Development (DTED), Department of Transport, Energy and Infrastructure (DTEI), Department of Further Education, Employment, Science and Technology (DFEEST), Department of Families and Communities (DFC), Land Management Corporation (LMC), City of Marion, City of Onkaparinga, the Southern Adelaide Economic Development Board and Flinders University.

The Office of the Southern Suburbs provides executive support to the Group in liaison with Minister Hill's office.

The role of the SSCG is:

  • To provide oversight for the expenditure of nominated funds under the assistance package
  • To co-ordinate State Government service delivery in response to the Mitsuibishi closure
  • To monitor infrastructure issues and future development of Tonsley Park and Science Park, as well as other strategic sites in the southern suburbs
