Desalination Plant

The Adelaide Desalination Plant at Port Stanvac, is one of the largest projects ever undertaken by the South Australian Government in the Southern Suburbs.

Announced in December 2007, the project is being managed by SA Water and will provide 150 million litres a day of drinking water for Adelaide. It was granted major project status in April 2008, with the shortlisted bidders to build the plant announced on 22 September, 2008.

The Environment Impact Statement (EIS) for the plant is now available as part of a six-week public consultation period, which will continue until Wednesday 24 December. For information on the consultation process visit www.planning.sa.gov.au/go/major-developments

The Desalination Plant, when it comes on line in December 2010, will not only assist in reducing Adelaide’s reliance on the River Murray but is part of a bigger picture of significant water projects in the Southern Adelaide region.

Water Proofing the South

The Water Proofing the South scheme features eight projects all aimed at ensuring water security in the Southern Adelaide region. Occurring within the City of Onkaparinga, the strategy seeks to provide fit-for-purpose alternative water sources such as recycled water and storm water for traditional sources such as mains water and groundwater so that overall water use in the region is sustainable; economically, environmentally and socially.

The organisations responsible for delivering the Project are:

  • The City of Onkaparinga;
  • SA Water; and
  • Willunga Basin Water Company.

Supported by:

  • The Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resource Management Board; and
  • The Flinders University's Research Centre for Coastal and Catchment Environments

The project has also received $34.5 million National Water Initiative funding (administered by the National Water Commission) for the implementation of the City of Onkaparinga's and SA Water's elements.
